CMH receives mobile unit

Chicot Memorial Hospital and its partners, Chicot Memorial Hospital Foundation, Chicot Community Health Network, Delta AHEC South, and Chicot Memorial Hospital Auxiliary are one step closer to obtaining several goals that these organizations have worked toward over the last year.

CMH in Motion, a mobile health screening unit, is a part of the CMH Health Outreach Program (HOP) project that these organizations have been striving for and together are making happen. This mobile unit will join the other outreach programs of these organizations including the Delta Medicine Assistance Program, the Delta Weigh program, the Forever Fit program, the Vial for Life program, and the upcoming Chicot Memorial Hospital Educational Resource Center.

Chicot Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently purchased a new FEMA trailer for the project from Federal Surplus Property for the purpose of providing this mobile health screening unit. This unit will provide diabetes screenings including blood sugar, Peripheral Vascular Disease, foot checks, vision, A1C (extensive blood sugar test), and urine analysis, General screenings will include blood pressure, weight, Body Mass Index, cholesterol, pulse, and hearing tests. Specialized screenings will include PSAs, bone density, depression, and memory loss testing. Each month the unit will focus on a specific health issue and offer testing and information specific to that disease.

The mobile health screening unit will provide outreach to the community providing recognition of existing health issues and promote health and wellness programs that are currently in place to address many of these disparities. These organizations are committed to the purpose of improving access to health care and decreasing the health disparities of Chicot and Ashley County and have cited the offering of community health screenings as a necessary component in creating awareness of the many health disparities in the community. These organizations agree that the health of their community is dependent on outreach programs that bring services and information to their residents in familiar settings to introduce them to potential services that could save their lives.

This unit will be at local churches, businesses, and festivals near you. If you are interested in being put on the scheduling calendar, please call Mellie at (870)265-9392. The unit will debut with diabetes testing the school district and its grand opening will be in February 2008 for Go Red Day.
